The Monument for the Peaceful Revolution

On October 7th 2010, 21 years after the first peaceful protests in Plauen, the monument for the peaceful revolution was inaugurated in a solemn ceremony. Ever since it is reminiscent of the beginning of the peaceful revolution and thousands of brave citizens who demonstrated for freedom and democracy on October 7th 1989 through the streets of Plauen. It was set up on the initiative of the local Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary and Soroptimist Clubs and donated by citizens and companies of the region. The artist Peter Luban from Rößnitz designed the monument.

The statue is located at the "Tunnel" a central place in Plauen where the triumph over the ruling powers was gained. The memorial was designed to represent a candle. It consists of an inner acrylic column which is illuminated and is enclosed by a three-part bronze shell. It portrays the hope of the people who lit candles themselves as a sign for the peaceful protest and their hope for change.
